They\nwanted him to have good grades and learn musical instruments. They wanted him\nto be doctor someday. But since childhood, Tony had a different calling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He wanted to be an entrepreneur. He wanted\nto build things and make them grow. Tony wanted to earn lots of money. This is\nwhat led him to his first business venture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At 9 years old, Tony dreamt to be the\nrichest worm breeder in the world. He ensured the safety and health of his\nworms. But after a month, he found them all gone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tony told his parents that it\u2019s boring\nanyway. Some of them became his business\npartner. One of them is Sanjay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sanjay and Tony were both hired by Oracle\nafter college. Both of them eventually quit. The two friends decided to build\ntheir own start-up instead. They called it Link Exchange. It\u2019s a service that\nruns banner ads on company websites. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Link Exchange had many clients. Tony and\nSanjay hired people they know. But as the company grew big, it lost its sense\nof culture. Tony saw that many of the employees did not care about the welfare\nof the company. They have their own personal agendas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Microsoft bought Link Exchange for $265\nmillion. Tony was required to stay for another year but he couldn\u2019t just do it\nanymore. He quit and looked for his next business venture. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Diversify<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tony bought some lofts in San Francisco. He\ninvited his college friends to join him. One of them is Alfred, the former\nfinance VP of Link Exchange. They all started an investment fund which they\ncalled Venture Frogs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One day, a guy named Nick Swinmurn called\nTony. He talked about his small online business. Shoesite.com is where Nick\nposted pictures of shoes from local stores. When he gets an order, he purchases\nit and ships it to the customer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At first, Tony was unconvinced. But then,\nNick talked about the statistics. There is indeed a potential market for shoes\nonline. Shoesite.com soon became Zappos.com<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tony and the others agreed to do drop\nshipping. Zappos will relay the orders and the brands will be the ones to ship.\nVenture Frogs funded the company. But it needs more investors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Tony got involved in\nday-trading. When Zappos run out of funds, he decided to commit full-time. He\nwanted to something more meaningful than just making profit. The\neconomy was in recession. Not one investor is willing to fund Zappos. Tony sold\nhis real estate properties and put in all his remaining money. It came to a\npoint when Zappos had only 2 weeks\u2019 worth of funds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tony had to lay off 20% of the staff and\ncut pay to 20% less. He let the employees move in to his lofts for free. He\nthought of ways on how they can increase sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zappos shifted from drop shipping to\ninventory. In this way, they can have more brands and more stocks available.\nZappos would be able to offer the shoes which are in demand. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The warehouse and shipping was outsourced\nto a company named E-logistics. But it turned out to be a terrible idea. Zappos\nonly lost more money because of inefficiency. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tony solved the issue with his college\nfriend Keith. They set up a new warehouse system. They also got rid of the\nwrong shipments and delayed orders. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The improvement of inventory and warehouse\nsystem became the turning point of Zappos. Instead of advertising and marketing, Zappos invested on customer\nservice and company culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tony had Zappos move to Las Vegas to set up\na competitive call canter department. He called it Customer Loyalty Team. The\n1-800 phone line is accessible 24\/7. The call center agents take time in\nengaging with the customers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The employees stick together through thick\nand thin. They came up with the 10 core values. Tony didn\u2019t want to commit the\nsame mistake with Link Exchange. He wanted Zappos to have a strong culture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first core value is Deliver Service\nThrough WOW. Zappos makes sure there is personal touch in every transaction.\nSometimes, customers are surprised with flowers and overnight shipping. The\npartnership with the UPS Worldport Hub made it possible to ship 24\/7, anytime\nand anywhere. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fourth core value is Be Adventurous,\nCreative and Open-minded. Employees are recruited not only based on their\nabilities but also on \u201cculture fit\u201d. They are encouraged to have fun, to be a\nlittle weird and to just be themselves. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Taking\nit to the Next Level<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Zappos gained more popularity in the media.\nThe quality customer service spread through word of mouth. Tony and the others\nwould share the Zappos story in events, blogs, tweets and day to day\nconversations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The board members are not happy with this\nidentity that Zappos created. They wanted Tony to focus on making profit.\nThat\u2019s why Tony and his friends thought that they need more leverage in the\ncompany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, in 2009, Amazon expressed its\ninterest in Zappos. Tony likes to call it a marriage. Amazon did not settle\nwith money. Instead, the shareholders traded their shares. It was an\nacquisition which benefited both companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amazon is more high-tech and Zappos is more\nhigh-touch. Together, they were able to provide the best customer service. The\nZappos employees were secured that nothing will change. The culture of\n\u201cDelivering Happiness\u201d will remain the same.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">End\nGame<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tony learned that there are 3 types of\nhappiness. The first one is pleasure. That is the happiness brought about by\nprofits. It\u2019s only temporary. Tony gained that happiness from Link Exchange and\nhis day-in trading. But it did not last for long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second type is passion. It is how the\nloyal employees of kept going through thick and thin. They committed\nthemselves, worked hard and believed in what they do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The third type of happiness is purpose. If\nyou have a higher purpose which is bigger than yourself, then you will have\nlong-lasting happiness. Zappos delivers happiness to the customers, to the\nemployees and to the world.
