The Search<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n

The book starts with a young man and his search for an effective manager. He went to different kinds of organizations. He visited banks, restaurants, hotels, stores, universities, government, and corporate offices.<\/p>\n

There are managers who describe themselves as autocratic, realistic, and profit-oriented. The employees consider them tough. These managers are more result-oriented. Their organizations win while their people lose.<\/p>\n

There are managers who describe themselves as participative, considerate, and humanistic. The employees consider them nice. These managers are more people-oriented. Their people win while their organizations lose.<\/p>\n

The young man felt frustrated. He thought that the managers he had met were doing half the job. He was about to give up. Then the young man heard about a special manager in a nearby town.<\/p>\n

People like to work for this manager. His team always delivered good results. The young man became curious. He called the special manager\u2019s office and asked for an appointment.<\/p>\n

The One Minute Manager<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n

When the young man entered the office, he found the manager standing in front of the window. He turned around, smiled, and asked, \u201cWhat can I do for you?\u201d The young man replied, \u201cI\u2019d like to learn how you manage people.\u201d<\/p>\n

The special manager did not consider himself as participative. In fact, he did not want to participate in the decision-making of his subordinates.<\/p>\n

The special manager also didn\u2019t consider himself as result-oriented. He cared both about people and results. For this manager, these concepts went hand in hand.<\/p>\n

There is a note on the manager\u2019s desk that said, \u201cPeople who feel good about themselves produce good results.\u201d The young man realized that was true.<\/p>\n

The manager helped his people feel good. When he did this, his employees got more work done. It isn\u2019t all about quantity. It\u2019s also about quality. The manager directed the young man to the window.<\/p>\n

They observed that more and more Americans were buying foreign cars. There were plenty of local cars to choose from, but they preferred the foreign ones. People choose foreign cars because they are cheaper and more efficient.<\/p>\n

Productivity is both quantity and quality. The manager explained that in order to achieve both, the key is to invest in the people.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re neither participative nor profit-minded, then how do you describe yourself as a manager?\u201d the young man asked. \u201cThat\u2019s easy. I\u2019m a One Minute Manager.\u201d He called himself this because the One Minute Manager got big results from people in just a small amount of time.<\/p>\n

The young man had never met a manager like him before. He could not bring himself to believe it. The manager said, \u201cListen, you\u2019d better talk to my people if you really want to know what kind of manager I am.\u201d<\/p>\n

He handed the young man a piece of paper. Written on it were the names of the people who directly reported to him. \u201cWho should I start with?\u201d The young man asked. \u201cI already told you, I don\u2019t make decisions for other people,\u201d the manager said firmly.<\/p>\n

There was a silence between them that made the young man very uncomfortable. Then the manager looked him in the eye and said, \u201cYou want to know about managing people, and I admire that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you have any questions after talking to some of my people, come back and see me. I\u2019d like to give you the One Minute Manager concept as a gift.
